How to Design Better Crypto Onboarding

Crypto onboarding usually asks for a wallet, a seed backup, a KYC selfie, and a first deposit before the product has shown a reason to stay. That is four high-anxiety tasks. Most people will complete zero.

Better onboarding is sequenced like SaaS: value, then commitment, then privileged actions. We apply that on Web3 Product Design work.

Three doors, not one funnel

1. Browse — prices, docs, markets. No wallet.
2. Connect — read-only or session. Enough to personalise, not enough to move funds.
3. Transact — deposit, trade, swap. Fees and risk copy appear here, not at the door.

If your only CTA is Connect Wallet, you have one door and it is locked.

Delay custody education

Seed phrases, hardware wallets, and “not your keys” belong after the user wants an account they could lose. Putting a 12-word ritual in front of a demo swap trains people to paste seeds into phishing sites later. Split “try” from “self-custody.”

Embedded wallets and passkeys can make door 2 feel like SaaS. Say clearly who can recover the account.

KYC as a gate with a map

Do not start KYC because the navbar has a Verify button. Start it when the user hits a limit (fiat on-ramp, withdrawal above X). Show:

• What they can do now
• What verification unlocks
• Time estimate and documents

Abandoned KYC is often a UX problem, not a compliance personality problem.

First success in one sitting

Define first success as one completed action: a testnet swap, a $20 deposit, a watch-only portfolio. Design the path with Wallet UX Best Practices so connect and network switch do not eat the session.

Measure:

• Land → connect attempt
• Connect success
• First funded account
• First completed tx

Copy that reduces fear

Avoid “irreversible” as decoration. Use it when the action is irreversible, next to undo alternatives (test amount, allowlist, delay withdrawals).
